§ 7.5-1. Definitions.

  • For the purposes of this chapter, the following terms, phrases, words, and their derivations shall have the meaning given herein. When not inconsistent with the context, words used in the present tense include the future, words in the plural number include the singular number, and words in the singular number include the plural number. The word "shall" is always mandatory and not merely directory.

    Burial space: A parcel of property, located within a cemetery, in which or upon which remains or cremains are, or are to be, buried or disposed. The term burial space shall be limited to the parcel of property set aside for the remains or cremains of a single body.

    Cemetery: A parcel of property known as the Greenwood Cemetery owned by the city or approved by the State of Florida pursuant to F.S. ch. 497, which is used or intended to be used for the burial or disposal of remains or cremains.

    Cremains: Cremation remains.

    Crypt: Interment space in pre-placed chambers located within a mausoleum.

    Immediate family: A person who is a relation by blood or marriage. For purposes f this chapter, a grandfather, grandmother, father, mother, spouse, child, grandchild, brother, sister, half-brother, half-sister, mother-in-law, father-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, half-brother-in-law and half-sister-in-law, shall be considered immediate family.

    Interment: The process of depositing a dead body in the earth.

    Interment right: The right granted by a land owner to another person which allows the other person to inter remains or cremains in a specified burial space.

    Mausoleum: A substantially exposed above-ground structure which is used or intended to be used for the entombment of remains or cremains.

    Monument: An item of tangible personal property which is used to identify or mark a burial space.

    Niches: Bible/cross - interment space located within a mausoleum.

    Pauper: A person so poor that he or she must be supported at public expense.

    Remains: A dead body.

    Shrubbery: Any planted, living material including any flowering plants, bushes, or other plants.

    Vault: A prefabricated concrete container which is designed to receive a casket at burial, or some other type of container approved by the city.
